How to Properly Package a Box for Safe Shipping

Published on: September 5, 2025

Properly packaging your items is the most important step to ensure they arrive at their destination safely. A well-packaged box can prevent damage during transit. Follow this step-by-step guide to become a packing expert.

Step 1: Choose the Right Box

Select a new, sturdy corrugated cardboard box. If you must reuse a box, make sure it has no punctures, tears, or corner damage. It should be large enough to accommodate your item(s) plus at least 2 inches of cushioning on all sides.

Step 2: Cushion Your Items

Wrap each item individually with cushioning material like bubble wrap or foam. Place a layer of cushioning at the bottom of the box. Place your wrapped item in the center and fill any empty spaces on all sides with more packing material (packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or air pillows). The goal is to prevent items from shifting.

Step 3: Seal the Box Securely

Use strong packing tape (not duct tape or masking tape) that is at least 2 inches wide. Apply tape evenly across the top and bottom seams. For heavier packages, use the H-taping method: tape the main seam and then tape the two edge seams, forming the letter 'H'.

Step 4: Apply the Shipping Label

Place the shipping label on the largest, flattest side of the box. Ensure the entire label is visible and not folded over any edges. Remove or cover any old labels or barcodes to avoid confusion.
